enVision Math
This year we are starting a new math curriculum called enVision. Each daily lesson provides a Visual Learning Bridge that teaches math concepts step-by-step with purposeful, sequential illustrations while connecting interactive learning with guided and independent skill and problem solving practice.

Saxon Phonics
Phonics is a method of teaching beginners how to read and spell by teaching them the sounds each letter or letter cluster makes and the rules governing the use of those sounds.  Only after this understanding of the sound/letter relationship is achieved can successful, independent reading occur.  The Saxon Phonics series builds on prior learning.  New learning is presented in increments, and each increment is reviewed throughout the year, providing every child with the exposure needed to achieve success.

Reading and Writing Instruction
Your students will be taught to read following the Direct Instruction model for reading instruction.  Students will be taught through large-group, small-group, and individualized instruction.  I will meet daily with small groups of students who are reading at similar levels.  Through the teaching of decoding targets and comprehension strategies, I will model and guide students through texts at their instructional levels.  Throughout the year, students will be going to other first grade classrooms according to their reading level.  If you have questions about your child's reading progress, please talk to his/her reading teacher.

This year will are starting Writing Alive, our new writing curriculum.  During writing instruction, we will be working together to compose written products with vivid lanugage.  Instructional targets will focus on techniques for planning, organization, vocabulary usage, conventions/mechanics (including spelling), and sentence and paragraph structure.  While the process of writing is continuously practiced, the purpose (and underlying organization) of the writing is of most importance.

Science and Social Studies
Your student will be taught the Science and Social Studies standards through International Baccalaureate planners using themes and science kits.  This year we will study: Relationships, Transportation, Family History, Solids & Liquids, Performing Arts and Animals.  For more information on IB, please visit http://www.ibo.org.
